Editor's Viewpoint: Business as usual

Social Development Minister Alex Attwood is showing a sense of realism by holding a review of Sunday trading hours. Currently shops don't open until 1pm, partly in recognition of the religious aspect of the day.

However, since the principle of Sunday shopping has long been conceded and since more and more people have less time to shop during the week, there seems no overwhelming case against a relaxation of opening hours. But employers must still take into account the views of staff and no one should be forced to work in contradiction of their sincere beliefs.
