Editor's Viewpoint: Carling Nations Cup, reviving rivalries

The Carling Nations Cup soccer tournament involving Northern Ireland, the Republic, Scotland and Wales is a welcome effort to revive local rivalries among the home countries, although ticket sales show that it has yet to fully capture the public imagination.

The absence of England from the line-up is a major blow as all the Celtic nations would love the opportunity to put one over the old enemy and the fans would certainly flock to the matches hoping for an upset. Nevertheless the tournament will provide real competition rather than the normal meaningless friendlies and who knows, Northern Ireland, the last winners of the Home Championships, may again prove themselves top dogs on these islands.
