Antrim has long been one of the Cinderella counties in gaelic football, but there are signs that it is awakening from decades of underachievement.
The victory of the St Gall’s club from Belfast in the all-Ireland club championship final yesterday demonstrates that the will and skill to succeed is there. It was a tremendous win for a club which suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the same stage a few years ago, and allied to recent successes by the Antrim county team, has revived interest in the game. There will be many youngsters now taking to the field in the hope of emulating their heroes in years to come.
