Editor's Viewpoint: Christmas spirit

The spirit of Christmas should be one of light amid the gloom, but not so in the picturesque village of Bessbrook in south Armagh where vandals have cut down the Christmas tree.

Bessbrook seems to have a particularly thick type of vandal. It is difficult to understand why anyone could be so stupid, or could achieve any positive feeling through an act which was so utterly devoid of sense.

The people of Bessbrook do not depend on a tree for their Christmas spirit, but it would be a proper step if the vandalised tree was replaced as a cross-community effort and also protected properly to show that some good can come out of this 'model village'.
