Editor's Viewpoint: Council must consider wildlife responsibility
Members of Newtownabbey Council are living in cloud cuckoo land if they believe that their fireworks display at Ballyclare last month did not seriously disturb and endanger wildlife in the area. A Council representative has claimed, quite amazingly, that "there is no scientific evidence that the fireworks disturb birds on a long-term basis".
Pure common sense, however, would suggest the contrary.
The din of a fireworks display is bound to upset nesting birds and their young.
The Council has undertaken to reconsider the venue for next year, and about time too.
Local councils are not always inspired or inspiring.
But in this case the behaviour of Newtownabbey Council really does deserve 'the bird'.
