Editor's Viewpoint: Courts show that they will not tolerate animal cruelty
Cruelty to animals is seen as a despicable crime by most people.
Essentially this is a society of pet lovers, but there are those who are either ill-disposed towards animals or simply incapable or unwilling to look after them properly. It is therefore encouraging to see the courts take a stern view of such behaviour.
A mother and daughter who let two dogs starve to death were each given 150 hours community service and warned they will go to jail if they breach the order. A woman who kept a dog and four cats in appalling conditions was given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay nearly £10,000 in costs. The courts have shown their teeth.
