Editor's viewpoint: Dedication of animal rescue centres is to be admired
A dog may be man's best friend, but that loyalty is not always reciprocated, as our story today shows.
The number of animals that are abandoned, left to stray and end up being put down is shocking and if it was not for the sterling work of rescue centres and sanctuaries the death toll would be immeasurably higher. But while the stories behind the pictures of these dogs can tug at the heartstrings, it has to be remembered that keeping a dog is a time consuming task and demands much attention.
They are not throwaway Christmas presents like so many others and anyone wanting to give a dog a new home must be fully up for the task.
