Editor's Viewpoint: Dropping standards within our Armed Forces a concern
the Ulsterman, Colonel Tim Collins, has hit out with characteristic bluntness at the sorry state of the UK defence forces where many service personnel are overweight and hardly fit for combat.
It could be argued that this is a reflection of the nation itself where far too many people are overweight and self-indulgent. Surely it must be part of the basic training for anyone entering our Armed Forces to be physically fit for the job, and prepared to maintain a high level of fitness. It is imperative that the training, fitness and commitment of our Armed Forces must attain the highest levels. We must not lower our standards in order to attract more recruits.
