Editor's Viewpoint: Dropping the ball

Ireland's narrow defeat by Wales in Dublin yesterday was the worst possible start to our rugby team's Six Nations championship. Irish players made too many mistakes, and the team was incapable of closing down the game to deny the Welsh, who once again rubbed salt in Irish wounds.

Ulster's Rory Best scored a heroic try, but Stephen Ferris unhappily made the infringement that led to the Welsh winning score. Next weekend the French beckon in Paris, and the Irish need to do much, much better if they are to salvage anything from the Six Nations this year.
