Editor's Viewpoint: Food for nought

Irish salmon could be the latest food to be given special status in the European Union - joining the likes of Parma ham, Cornish pastie, Feta cheese and Champagne as products which are specific to the region they come from and so the name cannot be used by other suppliers.

While this is a useful marketing tool and can be used by producers as an indication of a foodstuff's unique quality, it is now getting to the stage where every region is seeking to have its produce protected.

Next we will have individual farmers claiming that their crops deserve special recognition.
