Editor's Viewpoint: For Martin O'Neill, there is more to life than football
Martin O'Neill is a very bright man and he knew that the writing was on the wall as far as managing the Republic of Ireland was concerned.
Sport is a cruel occupation, especially being in charge of an international football team. Fans, even of small countries like the Republic, have inflated expectations if the team has done well in the past. When those expectations are not realised the axe is never far away.
But Martin, who has had considerable success as both player and manager, knows, unlike Bill Shankly, that life and death is more important than football. His wife's recovery from cancer was the greatest victory in his life.
