Editor's Viewpoint: Giving the gift of life

As the Transplant Games open in Belfast today spare a thought for the family of a teenage boy from the city whose tragic death will be remembered at the games today.

The parents of 19-year-old Mark Elliott donated his organs - even though it was a very difficult decision for them - and one of the recipients, a four-year-old boy, is in the city today.

Mark's organs helped five people in total. While it does not diminish their grievous loss, at least his family know that good came from his death. His parents were initially against donating his organs but now want more people to sign the NHS Organ Donor Register. A simple signature could be the gift of life - and there is no greater gift.
