Editor's Viewpoint: Growing soul food
There is something about the very idea of having an allotment that stirs the soul.
It conjures up images of hazy summer days spent working with the soil, becoming self-sufficient in vegetables and enjoying a rustic way of life, without any of the pressures or discomfort of actual farming.
Hundreds of people, it seems, share this image and every plot released is immediately over-subscribed by eager members of the public from all walks of life. It is the perfect way to chill out among like-minded enthusiasts and probably does more for the environment than all the well-meaning government initiatives put together.
