Editor's Viewpoint: James Bond doesn't show the real spying game

The Queen’s University professor, Keith Jeffrey, is no Ian Fleming, but even the James Bond creator never got the same opportunity to rummage through the files of Britain’s intelligence service, MI6.

What he uncovered will no doubt make fascinating reading, but, as he admits, there were many other things that he was not allowed to publish.

For most of us, our knowledge of the world of spies comes from either the highly glamourised Bond stories or the John le Carre novels, but the reality as revealed by Jeffrey was usually more prosaic, leaving us neither stirred nor shaken, but certainly better informed.
