Editor's Viewpoint: Laws are rubbish
Environment Minister Edwin Poots has every right to be angry at the lack of prosecutions against those who fly-tip.
One group of volunteers has found the personal details of more than 600 people among illegally dumped rubbish over the past 15 years, yet only two successful court cases have followed. That is a shocking lack of enforcement. There is no sanction on those who despoil neighbourhoods and cost the local authorities millions of pounds in clean-ups. Mr Poots is to introduce new legislation, but unless offenders will be brought to book, the laws will be meaningless. To date there is only one word to describe the clamp down on litter louts — rubbish.
