Editor's Viewpoint: New Year has a hollow ring to it
Yes, the weather conditions are harsh, but it hardly seems a reason for Northern Ireland to give the New Year a total cold shoulder. None of our towns or cities are planning to ring in 2011 with official civic entertainment, which must make this one of the most inhospitable regions of the UK.
Considering that 2012 will mark the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic and 2013 will see Londonderry reign as the UK's first City of Culture, both our major cities might have used the New Year as a dry run for hosting a civic knees-up. Instead, citizens are being left to make their own fun or line the pockets of commercial entrepreneurs. That's a really poor show by our civic leaders.
