Editor's Viewpoint: No happy ever afters as store bungles promotion
The Build-A-Bear chain showed how not to run a retail promotion yesterday. The 'pay your age' price promise led to chaos at many stores including one in Belfast which had to close after reports of punch ups and a staff member being assaulted as some shoppers fought for the bargain bears.
It was a deal too good to miss - the toys cost at least £20 normally - and thousands of customers descended on stores. In many instances the children hoping to leave cuddling a bear were simply reduced to tears when the store doors shut. Parents will have to tell them a new bedtime story - one that doesn't include the line 'and everyone lived happily ever after'.
