Editors Viewpoint: No need for ref rage

Who would be a referee? It may be human to err, but in sports fans’ eyes the man in the middle should never make a mistake.

World Cup final ref Howard Webb is a hate figure in Holland because he did not give a foul in the run-up to Spain’s winning goal.

At Croke Park, referee Martin Sludden was assaulted for allowing a controversial winning goal. In a world of economic recession, global terrorism, and occasional mayhem, sport should be a source of light relief, not a matter of life and death. Yes, referees will make mistakes, and sometimes that may cost your team victory. But in the great scale of things does it really matter?
