Editor's Viewpoint: Northern no more

The Northern Bank, a financial icon in the province for more than 200 years, is to fade into history with its rebranding by parent company, Danske Bank.

Every sign of the institution is to be erased, even the banknotes, though just how customers will convince retailers to accept Danske-branded currency as sterling is anyone's guess.

Though there is one part of the Northern's history which the bank, no doubt, will be glad to see airbrushed away. Anyone remember the great Danske Bank robbery when the IRA stole £26m? No, we didn't think you would.
