Editor's Viewpoint: Not the final whistle

Ulster coach Brian McLaughlin, having guided his team to its second successive Heineken Cup quarter-final, may well feel that he is being harshly treated by not having his contract renewed at the end of this season.

But such are the incessant demands for almost instant success - actually winning trophies - that no manager or coach can ever feel really secure.

Even winning doesn't always come with a job guarantee. Vincente del Bosque, who guided Real Madrid to two league titles, two Champions League trophies and a number of other cups, was summarily dismissed on the day after clinching the league title.

Brian might care to reflect on how that worked out. Del Bosque went on to manage the Spanish national team and lift the World Cup.
