Editor's Viewpoint: Nursing grievances over NHS chiefs' salaries

NHS chiefs have defended salaries of £100,000-plus for top management posts, saying they are necessary to attract the right calibre of candidate.

They further argue that management costs, at £149m, account for only 3% of the health budget and that efficiency savings of £50m will be made in this financial year.

These are strong arguments, but they do not dispel the perception that frontline services within the NHS are overstretched and that vital staff, like nurses - who earn far less than managers - are the first to go when efficiencies are introduced.
