Editor's Viewpoint: Oh, Christmas tree

Civic leaders in Downpatrick, still rankling from the ribbing over their disastrous Christmas tree last year, have pulled out all the stops to provide much better decoration for the town centre this year.

Perhaps the £17,500 cost of the tree and lights is a mite costly at a time of retrenchment in services, but the newly revamped town square deserved a fitting festive centrepiece.

It may even attract some more visitors to the town which will be a welcome boost for retailers. Sometimes we forget that Christmas is a time to be cheerful and the local council has given the townspeople a reason to feel proud. Happy Christmas Downpatrick.
