Editor's Viewpoint: O'Neill his own man

Martin O'Neill has always been his own man. He is articulate, intelligent and single minded, and, when he wants to be, a man who plays his cards close to his chest.

There is immediate speculation that he resigned from Aston Villa on the eve of a new season because the owners would not give him the transfer funds he thinks are required to make the club a genuine challenger for major honours, including entry into the coveted Champions League competition.

There is no doubt he is ambitious - he applied for the England manager's job - and, equally there is no doubt that many other clubs would snap him up in an instant. They will get an excellent manager. What they won't get is a Yes man.
