Editor's Viewpoint: Our Lord of Rings
Tonight one of the best advertisements for Northern Ireland will appear on our television screens with the opening episode of Game of Thrones, an epic fantasy filmed in the province by American TV giants, HBO. With interior scenes shot at the Paint Hall of the former Belfast shipyard and the rest of the province used as backdrops to the action, this series has the potential to do for the province what the film Lord of the Rings did for New Zealand. The province has a skilled film industry and the sort of diverse locations within a very compressed area that makes it an ideal place for shooting films or television programmes. Game of Thrones is tipped to be a global success and we may well get a further financial dividend from it, both in increased tourism and in interest from film makers.
