Editor's Viewpoint: Pat Hume greatly deserving of honour for peace efforts

John Hume is rightly recognised as a political colossus on the Irish political stage and the primary figure in the peace process. But behind him every step of the way was his remarkable wife Pat, who from the 1960s to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 reared a family, ran John's political office and was there to greet diplomats, journalists and international political figures who made their way to their home.

Pat was the tireless worker behind the scenes and, for many years now, John's carer. There is no more deserving recipient of the Irish Red Cross's Lifetime Achievement Award and we all owe her a debt for her role in creating peace here.
