Editor's Viewpoint: Politics could do with more people like Seamus Close
Former Alliance Party deputy leader Seamus Close, who has died after a brief illness, was an outspoken politician and, later, political commentator, but he managed to deliver his straight talking messages without personal rancour. The tributes paid to him made it clear that he was respected across the political spectrum.
Given the toxic comments which so often polluted political discourse in recent times, many would wish that we could return to those civil times when it was possible to have rigorous debate without causing offence. Mr Close was a decent, straight-dealing man with a strong constituency record and we could do with more of his ilk today.
