Editor's Viewpoint: Pope Benedict fuels condom debate
The latest comments by Pope Benedict on the use of condoms have implications for thousands of Catholics worldwide, and the Pope’s changing views on this issue may signal a rethink on other important aspects of the Church’s teaching.
However, Pope Benedict gave only qualified approval for the use of condoms in some cases, such as male prostitutes seeking to stop the spread of AIDS/HIV. Curiously there was no mention of the use of condoms among married couples in the developing world where this disease is decimating the population.
Many people will feel Pope Benedict has not gone far enough, but he has now opened a debate which will surely herald further important changes in Catholic teaching.
