Snow Patrol singer Gary Lightbody is an icon to his legion of fans. As well as hanging on every word of his well-crafted songs they should also read his searingly honest interview in this newspaper today. Here is a man who knows the degradation that alcoholism and drug abuse can bring.

He still shudders when he thinks how he abused medical staff who treated him after a drink-induced fall and realises that the demons which previously haunted him haven't gone away, they just lie dormant.

But he has found far more contentment in sobriety and freedom from drugs than he did from addiction. His fans should heed that message.
