Editor's Viewpoint: Runners' true grit

It was a dismal Bank Holiday weatherwise, but even the pouring rain and unseasonably cold temperatures could not stop the 20,000 people who lined up to take part in the Belfast Marathon.

They were running for all sorts of charities, good causes or just for enjoyment but everyone deserved a medal for their grit and determination.

Marathons have become occasions for people to show the positive side of human nature, whether it is just a personal challenge or taking part to help others. Whatever the reason they make those of us on the sidelines feel a little humbler and may even spur some of us to compete next time around.
