Editor's Viewpoint: Thank goodness for our charities filling the gaps
It is a sad commentary on the welfare state that a charity had to step in to play Santa for a Northern Ireland family where the father is suffering from a terminal condition. Indeed, the Motor Neurone Disease Association has handed out grants totalling £70,000 to families here affected by the condition for essentials like home adaptations or paying energy bills.
This is magnificent work by the charity and again highlights how similar bodies raise awareness of and fund research into a wide range of diseases and conditions.
Governments can find the money to wage war on other nations but are often found wanting when it comes to waging war on terminal illnesses.
