Editor's Viewpoint: The beautiful game
Those of us of a certain age still remember World Cup Mexico 1970 as the tournament when soccer really was the beautiful game.
The Brazilian team which lifted the trophy included the incomparable Pele, and a host of other great players who were allowed to display their sublime skills.
Is it too much to hope that this generation's great players will also put on an exhibition of football in South Africa over the next month that will last as long in the memory? Or has the game become too cynical with diving, cheating, and histrionics being practiced as much as ball control? It would be great if a team of artists, not artisans, lifts the trophy on July 11.
