Editor's Viewpoint: The Bill's locked up

The Bill, one of the most realistic police dramas, is no more. ITV executives say the axe fell because of dropping audiences, but a show which ran for 27 years must have been doing something right.

It may not have been to everyone's taste but it was not afraid to tackle strong themes in tune with modern life.

Some of the cast spent longer in the drama than many police officers ever serve, clocking up over 20 years of donning the uniform. But now they are all retired and the crime lords of Sun Hill can rest easy in their beds as the doors slam on their local nick.
