Editor's Viewpoint: The brighter side

Before we get too dispirited, there are two encouraging stories in this newspaper today. One is the huge numbers of people who have visited the Titanic Belfast visitor attraction. It proved so popular over the Christmas holidays that it had to post sold out notices.

At the same time Londonderry/Derry is the subject of glowing tributes from travel writers in influential national newspapers, a vital endorsement for its year as UK City of Culture.

Sometimes we don't fully realise our own potential until it is pointed out by outsiders and this good news is a welcome counterpoint to the recent dismal stories emanating from here.
