Editor's Viewpoint: The name game

The names that we give our children can be influenced by all sorts of factors such as family favourites, popular culture and even famous people.

Of course some people went to extremes such as football mad dads naming their daughters after all their favourite soccer idols. Thankfully, for the children's sake, such behaviour was a rarity and according to a survey of babies christened this year in Northern Ireland, fairly traditional names are in vogue currently.

Jack and Sophie were the top choices in 2011 with Jack remaining a firm favourite for the past decade.

Surprisingly, given this year's Royal bride, Katie, has fallen out of the top 10 choices for girls. And the current queen of pop, Lady Gaga, doesn't even get a mention. Phew!
