Editor's Viewpoint: Theatre of dreams

The new £18m Lyric Theatre is getting off to the best possible start when it opens in May with our own internationally acclaimed actor, Kenneth Branagh, treading the boards. It is a fitting casting for the Lyric, since in its previous life it was synonymous with developing local acting and writing talent.

Now our creative arts will have a high class home in which to nurture talent and entertain audiences. Actors like Branagh, Liam Neeson, and James Nesbitt may be hard acts to follow, but they all began in far humbler surroundings in the province, showing that talent will always out whatever the obstacles. With luck we will be acclaiming a new generation of talent emerging from the Lyric in years to come.
