Editor's Viewpoint: There can be a positive side to the power of celebrity
Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody and former Northern Ireland footballer Pat McGibbon deserve credit for confronting their demons publicly. The singer fell into the clutches of alcoholism and depression but was pulled from the darkness by friends. His legion of fans will take inspiration from his words.
Pat McGibbon has set up a charity in the province to help promote better mental health through sport. He admits he did not grieve properly after his brother took his own life and the new organisation is his way of trying to instil the right mental attitude in young people. Both stars show that the power of celebrity can be positive if properly harnessed.
