Editor's Viewpoint: Titanic centenary

Yesterday it was exactly 100 years since the ill-fated Titanic was launched down the slipways in Belfast to later begin its first and only voyage.

While some may wonder why the liner is still celebrated, it should be remembered that it was a fantastic piece of craftsmanship and engineering. The Belfast shipyard was one of finest shipbuilders in the world at that time.

Belfast rightly remains proud of its association with Titanic and its sister ships, never mind the hundreds of other vessels which were created there. Even now, when shipbuilding is becoming a distant memory in the city, we should recognise the craftsmanship and skill of those who created maritime history.
