Editor's Viewpoint: Town's son shines
A much more positive image of Northern Ireland will be shown today when actor Liam Neeson is made a freeman of Ballymena.
That the tribute was proposed by the town's nationalist mayor and backed by the largely DUP-controlled council, shows how attitudes have changed in what was once one of the most hardline local authorities.
Neeson, of course, is a very worthy recipient, a fine actor and a sterling ambassador for his home town and Northern Ireland in general. Everyone here was touched by the tragic death of his wife Natasha in a skiing accident in 2009, and they will applaud this award which recognises his contribution to putting Ballymena on the world map.
