Editor's Viewpoint: Trailblazer Heather should be an inspiration to women
Heather Smart never set any limits on what she could do and proved that she could follow her dream by becoming Northern Ireland's first female firefighter 27 years ago.
She required great courage, not just to do the job but also to cope with those who thought a woman had no right to be fighting fires.
It is a matter of great satisfaction to her, as she retires from the job, to know that 64 women have followed in her footsteps.
Her story should be an inspiration to other women who want to become trailblazers in their chosen careers and it is also a tribute to her parents, who encouraged her and her sisters to be what they wanted to be.
