Editor's Viewpoint: True acts of bravery

As hundreds more Northern Ireland-based troops head out to Afghanistan, today we report on the exceptional courage of soldiers from the province who have already served there.

One 21-year-old, Peter Mawhinney, put his life on the line to rescue a wounded colleague in an act of selfless daring.

A total of 25 men from the Royal Irish and Irish Guards received honours for gallantry showing that true heroism is still being displayed every day in those far off killing fields. We salute them.
