Editor's Viewpoint: Unexpected delivery

It is not often that a government department can be complimented for lateral thinking or an innovative idea. However, credit is due to the Department of Health for coming up with a novel way of increasing maternity services provision in Belfast.

A review has been ordered into the feasibility of locating the new facility on the top three floors of a new critical care building being built on the Royal Hospitals' site. So instead of waiting for a new women's hospital - an unlikely development in the present economic climate - new maternity services could be available in three years' time.

That would be a really unexpected delivery.
