Editor's Viewpoint: Unstinting love

The story of Jonathan Simms, the young Belfast man who has survived for 10 years with variant CJD - making him something of a medical miracle - is an inspiring tale of the love of his parents for their son. Don and Karen fought the medical establishment to be allowed to use a controversial treatment which is now credited with keeping him alive.

The couple - and the rest of the family - have given over their lives to the care and attention of Jonathan. Every murmured word, every squeeze from his hand or blink of his eye is a momentous event for them and a testament to their round-the-clock devotion. But to Don and Karen, that's just what parents are for.
