Editor's Viewpoint: Way Jim tells 'em

The suggestion has been made by former Belfast Lord Mayor Jim Rodgers that the comedian Frank Carson, who died recently, should be granted posthumously the Freedom of the City.

The suggestion has some merit, but the concept of such an award raises practical questions. For example, what is the point of awarding the Freedom of the City to someone who has died? If this award is given to one individual, there are many good cases for granting similar awards to others who have died and the list could be very extensive.

Whatever the City decides to do, however, the enduring humour of Belfast's own Frank Carson will be the most lasting tribute to his memory.
