The early stages of the World Cup have been remarkable for the lack of respect shown by minor nations such as Iceland, Iran and South Korea when taking on the so-called giants of the game.
The greatest upset has been the elimination of Germany at the group stage for the first time in 80 years, but teams like Brazil and Spain have also been under-performing.
For once England have played down their chances of success and look all the better for it. The match against Belgium tonight poses a bit of a dilemma as the loser may have the easier route through the knock-out stages.
