Editor's Viewpoint: We dig Alex's idea

Northern Ireland lags behind many other parts of the UK in the provision of council-run allotments and Environment Minister Alex Attwood is to be commended for examining how councils here can be encouraged to provide more grown-your-own spaces.

Having a little bit of land to grow fruit and vegetables - a sort of mini Good Life - is the dream of many people. Not only is it a way to get home-grown produce, but it is a therapeutic lifestyle and a great way to meet other like-minded people. It is one way of going green that any of us can understand and could benefit from.

Let us hope the councils don't dig in their heels on Mr Attwood's plans.
