Editor's viewpoint: Why fighting fires is no longer a job for the boys
There are few jobs nowadays which are the sole preserve of men. By any definition a firefighter is both a potentially hazardous occupation and also a physically demanding one.
However, as our feature on two women who are part of the firefighting team at the International Airport shows females are capable of holding their own in this line of work.
And with only 46 women among the 2,000 firefighters in Northern Ireland they are keen to act as role models for other women seeking a challenging career. They have been telling young girls just what is required and encouraging them to consider one day donning a firefighters uniform.
