English media take Best for granted, but not Sir Michael
IT may have been a slip of the keypad, but the tweet by the BBC describing George Best as a legendary England player is symptomatic of the English media's desire to claim any outstanding sporting figure from within the UK as one of their own. George was the best, but he was a proud Northern Ireland man and we remain proud of him.
The tweet accompanied an interview with Sir Michael Parkinson about his latest memoir on George in which the former chat show host reveals that he trod the same path of alcohol abuse as the footballer. Perhaps, having walked in the same shoes, that is why Sir Michael is more sympathetic to George than many others.
