But instead of then giving up the fight they simply redoubled their efforts, returned to the fray and made a success of their lives.

To those names add that of David James Kerr, who dreamt up the catchy For Cod and Ulster name for his initial business idea, a fish and chip shop which soon became three before going under.

Broke, but unbowed, he literally sold the coat off his back on his next venture, a high-end clothes retailing business which had a £1m turnover last year. His story should be essential reading on a business school curriculum.
