Fair play to Orange Order's attempt to woo Open fans
Will the Orange Order's drive to attract golf fans to one of its demonstrations over the Twelfth be a winner, or will it be a pitch too far? Either way, the Order is to be commended for its outreach effort, which began with rebranding parades as Orangefest. Belatedly, it has recognised that the Twelfth is a colourful spectacle which, taken out of the sectarian cockpit of Northern Ireland, would undoubtedly attract a wider range of spectators.
Its history and religious exclusivity may be issues too complex even for those who understand the rules of golf, but the regalia should appeal to people who dress up in odd apparel in pursuit of a ball.
