Farmer Ben and his tractor are made of strong stuff
Farmers have a reputation for seeking the best possible value from their purchases, but few could have been as successful as the McFarland family from Moy in Tyrone. Father Ben bought a David Brown Selectamatic 880 tractor in 1969 and 50 years later both Ben and the tractor are still going strong.
At £865 the tractor must be rated as one of the bargains of the century, being put to work virtually every day since. It may lack some of the comforts of modern tractors such as a cab and power steering, but its sheer longevity puts it in a league of its own. Talking of which, Ben turns 93 next month, showing that he is cast in the same durable mould.
